Upgrading Hurstmere Green

Work to transform Takapuna’s Hurstmere Green into a more vibrant, usable space will take place from May to December 2012.

The new green space will provide a central area for people to gather, relax and enjoy, as well as a location for public events and entertainment in the heart of Takapuna.

The $2.3m project to be completed by Kalmar Construction Ltd, includes improved seating, enhanced lighting, new public art and a level grass area.

A new wide pathway will also be built to improve access between Takapuna’s shopping area and the beachfront.

The main components of the design include:

  • a wide, direct path from Hurstmere Road to The Strand beachfront
  • creation of an events area for public entertainment
  • improved seating for people to relax and enjoy their surroundings
  • removal and relocation of some trees
  • new flowering plants and trees that add to the character of the green
  • enhanced lighting to improve safety
  • leveling of the grassed area
  • provision of new public art
  • improved connection to the adjacent properties
  • demolition of the toilet block (has been undertaken).

Following three years of consultation, the project responds to the community’s request for improved public spaces in Takapuna.

The Devonport Takapuna Local Board supports the transformation of Takapuna through the implementation of a number of projects, such as the redevelopment of Hurstmere Green.
