If you love Auckland and have ideas for our city's future, then you should consider running for council.

Running as a candidate is an opportunity to put forward your ideas for Auckland's future and make your voice heard.


How you can make a difference

As an elected member, you will be:

  • involved in governing the largest city in the country
  • part of the largest council in Australasia
  • part of a unique governance model internationally
  • one of the decision-makers who will help define the future of Auckland’s communities
  • able to have your say in helping achieve economic growth for Auckland
  • part of meeting the current and future needs of communities for infrastructure, public services and performance of regulatory functions.

Who can stand for council

Successful elected members are likely to be:

  • effective decision-makers
  • excellent communicators, able to relate to a wide range of people from many different cultures and disciplines
  • good at building relationships and networking
  • often called upon to speak publicly at meetings and events, and with the media (training can be provided to help develop these skills)
  • flexible and able to prioritise and manage time effectively.
