Bylaws

A bylaw is a rule made by the council that affects how people live, work and play.

Bylaws protect both the environment and your rights. They often cover health, safety and environmental issues such as the control of traffic, dogs, nuisances and food premises as well as signage, waterway navigation and the use of public places.

The consequences of not complying with a rule can result in fines, seizure of property and remedial action. Some bylaws are enforced by council staff and some by external agencies such as the New Zealand Police.

We are carrying out a bylaw review programme to integrate and rationalise Auckland bylaws to achieve greater consistency across the region.

Bylaws that were made by former councils in the Auckland region will remain in force until they are replaced with a new bylaw, revoked, or they expire.
