Mayor and elected representatives

Auckland Council has two complementary and non-hierarchical decision-making parts:

  • The governing body, consisting of a mayor elected by all Aucklanders and 20 councillors elected on a ward basis.
  • 21 local boards, with members elected by local board area.

The governing body and the local boards share the decision-making responsibilities of the Auckland Council:

  • The governing body will focus on the big picture and on region-wide strategic decisions.
  • Local boards will represent their local communities and make decisions on local issues, activities and facilities.

Remuneration Authority Determination

The Remuneration Authority issues a new determination for the remuneration for elected members annually.

Annual Salary

Elected Members are classified as self employed and are paid an annual salary

There are different levels of remuneration depending on specific responsibilities being undertaken. The Remuneration Authority sets the total remuneration pool nationally.

Resource Management Act hearings

The chairperson of a resource consent hearing meeting is paid $100.00 per hour.

The members of a resource consent hearing meeting are paid $80.00 per hour.

For any period of hearing time less than one hour, the fee is apportioned accordingly.



Expenses and allowances policy

Elected Members are provided with allowances and reimbursed for expenses incurred whilst carrying out their duty as an Elected Member.
