The initiative provides an outstanding platform for local young people to explore their creative side, and to gain skills and confidence.

“We’re really excited about the project,” says theatre manager Peter Hunt. “Young people in Papakura are passionate and creative and it’s great to be able to provide them with an opportunity to thrive.”

Young people who get involved will have the opportunity to develop their performing arts skills, build confidence and learn from very experienced tutors.

The youth theatre company will also provide young people with an insight into what it takes to build a long and successful career in the performing arts industry. 

“I would love to see more local people involved in the arts; it’s a truly rewarding career,” says Peter.

The new company will meet for the first time on 8 February, and is open to local young people age 8 to 18.  Participants will work towards producing an annual performance that showcases the skills they have developed as part of the youth theatre company.

Hawkins Theatre is owned and operated by Auckland Council and provides a first class platform for performing arts in Papakura.
