Home Fires Burning: Remembering New Zealand's Vietnam War is a mixed media installation representing part of a Te Manatu Taonga, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, project exploring New Zealand's involvement in the Vietnam War over more than a decade. The installation focuses on creative work of veterans both during and after the war, and explores the role of media in shaping public perceptions.
Auckland artist Timothy Chapman extends Home Fires Burning into a contemporary art context through a concurrent exhibition, Boys Will Be Boys? Through humour and the vantage point of the child, the objects and activities of play are used as entry points into conversations regarding gender identity, as well as the dislocation between domestic ideologies and wider social realities.
