John Coley: Double Vision

Due to a loss of vision through macular degeneration, John Coley, artist and past director of the Christchurch Art Gallery, became increasingly frustrated at being unable to enjoy the challenges, process and satisfactions of art making that had been a large part of his life for six decades.

In response he began to make collages with cut coloured papers, bypassing some of the technical problems of painting without vision.

This exhibition showcases his latest cut paper works, formal abstractions that communicate John's pleasure in the act of art-making and in colour.

Alongside this work he will exhibit his earlier oil paintings "Nightlights", depicting visual memories of the city at night.
