Nearly 2000 years ago Ovid wrote that "Nothing is constant in the whole world". Intellectually we know this is true, but the feeling, the emotion, the pervasiveness of change in the realisation, causes us anxiety as individuals.
The scream is a release button for a state of anxiety.
Robyn Hoonhout’s dramatic Screams are life-size photographic prints of subjects spanning a wide range of ages and ethnic backgrounds. They relate directly to our experience of living and how we absorb, on a daily basis, news of earthquakes, suicides, ash clouds and accidents.
It’s not all gloom and doom though - these portraits also express a wonderfully cathartic release of emotion. Standing in a room surrounded by silent screams is not as scary as it may sound - it’s actually quite invigorating.
