Tepid Baths (under construction)
In April 2010 the Tepid Baths closed for repairs and a major makeover after independent engineers advised council that the building's structural issues pose a significant risk to public health and safety.
At nearly 100 years old, the building is ready for work on its roof and concrete supports to ensure it remains a great place to swim for the next 50 years.
The Council has allocated $15.8million for the redevelopment of the baths. The project will take care of the deeper structural issues that aren't readily visible to the naked eye. It will also address general wear and tear and an overall upgrade of the pools, fitness centre and changing rooms.
Expected timeframes
Construction is still on track for completion in the second quarter of 2012 and the baths are expected to open in mid 2012 .
April 2012 update
It has been another busy period on the Tepid Baths redevelopment project.
The roof over the pool complex is now finished along with the stunning new glass lanterns. On Monday 20 February 2012, the tall Tepid Baths sign was reinstated in its original design onto the building.
The main pool area has made significant progress with most of the tiles laid.
Tiling in the learners pool is completed with final touch-ups to be undertaken. Tiling on the concourse is significantly progressed. Another major feature is the reinstatement of the cabanas around the learners pool and main pool. The cabanas have been designed to match the original 1914 design as much as possible.
Fitout of the changing rooms on the ground level (for pool users) and on level one (for fitness users) is well progressed. Most of the walls in the new reception area, sauna, steam-room and offices have been installed. In the fitness area on level one, air conditioning vents have been installed and work is now focused on finishing this space.
The new plant-room is taking shape with the new filters and pumps being installed. Work is now progressing on connecting up all the pipework and ducting.
Externally, it is slow and delicate work stripping 100 years of paint away from the front façade. Much of the building plaster needs repairing and this will be carefully undertaken before a breathable paint system is applied.
The main construction phase is due to be completed in the next two months. The project will then move into finishing, commissioning and fit-out, with a small number of specific construction works to be undertaken during this period.
Auckland Council has resolved that the interim operation of the Tepid Baths will be undertaken by Council staff lead by the award-winning team which operate the aquatic facilities in Auckland. The Operations team are working through the staff recruitment, programming, marketing and fit-out details for the Tepid Baths and will be making announcements about these over the next few months. An announcement about the opening date will also be made shortly, along with information about memberships and programming
If you are not already on our email database, please send your name and email address to Tepid Baths and we will be in touch.
