About dog registration

It is important to register your dog every year as part of being a responsible dog owner. The registration period is from 1 July-30 June each year.

If you are the owner of a dog, the registration guidelines are:

  • all dogs must be registered before they turn three months old
  • they should be registered at the address where they spend most of the time
  • if you are under 16 years of age, the dog must be registered under a parent's or guardian's name
  • you can reduce the registration fee if you have your dog de-sexed and/or by obtaining a dog owner licence (in some areas, previously called "responsible dog owner status")
  • if you have an unregistered dog you may be prosecuted.

A dog must wear a colour coded registration disc to show it has been registered for that year (the 2011/2012 colour is yellow, the 2010/2011 colour was green).

If your dog is lost, he or she can be quickly identified using  the registration tag.

Some areas do not allow more than one registered dog owner, so only one person will show on the form. Legally a person can be the dog’s owner without being the registered dog owner.

If your dog has been previously registered with Auckland Council (or any former Auckland council), you should receive a renewal notice in mid-June of each year.

Online with a credit card

In some areas, you can renew your dog's registration online using a credit card:

Please note: You will not be able to complete your registration online if any of the following information is missing from the renewal form or if your or your dog’s details have has changed since the last registration year:

  • class of dog

Payments made after 2 August do not qualify for the "early bird" discounted fees.

Manukau dog owners - if your dog's details are wrong

Lower fee for de-sexed dogs

If you can provide proof that your dog has been de-sexed you will qualify for the lower fee. If you no longer hold that proof we will accept the owner hand-amending the details on the registration form to 'neutered' and qualifying for the lower fee. All changes made by the dog owner must be initialled and the form signed.

By signing the declaration section (on the registration form), you are declaring and verifying that all the details on the form are true and correct.

As per Section 41 of the Dog Control Act 1996, it is an offence to falsify the information and anyone found doing so may be liable to further action - including issuing of an infringment notice ($750) or, on summary conviction, a fine not exceeding $3,000.

Background

Dog registration fees in Manukau have not previously been based on whether a dog was de-sexed or not and so this information has not been formally recorded in our internal Manukau system before. The new regional fee structure is based on whether a dog owner has a dog owners licence or not, and whether a dog is de-sexed or not.
