What to do if your dog is lost or missing

An Animal Management Officer may impound your dog if it is straying or wandering. We can easily identify and return your dog to you if it is wearing its registration tag or has a microchip inserted.

We will contact you if your dog has been impounded.

If you have lost your dog, please contact  your nearest animal shelter, or call us on 09 301 0101 if it is outside shelter opening hours.

Report a found dog

You can report a found dog by contacting your nearest animal shelter.

Even if a dog seems to be stray, it might be missing or stolen from its home. If a dog has been hanging around your area and you suspect it is a stray, you can also contact one of organisations above that help with lost, missing and found dogs.

Impounded dogs

We can impound dogs that are straying or wandering. If your dog has been impounded, you will need to pay the impounding fees to claim your dog. The fees help to cover the costs of looking after your dog while it is impounded, such as food, exercising and cleaning kennels.

If your dog is not registered and it gets impounded, you will need to pay the registration fee as well as any impoundment fees before we can release your dog.

The registration year begins on 1 July. All dogs impounded after this date, including during the month of July, will therefore be required to be registered for the upcoming year prior to release from the shelter.

You can pay impounding fees in cash or by credit card - we do not accept cheques.

You must get your dog microchipped before we release it from impoundment if:

  • your dog is unregistered when it gets impounded or
  • it gets impounded twice after 1 July 2006.

If you don't pay the fees within seven days of your dog being impounded, we may adopt out or euthanise your dog.

Seizing unregistered dogs

If your dog is unregistered, our Animal management officers have the legal authority to seize and impound it.

Legally, they can enter private property, even if the property is fully fenced, to impound an unregistered dog. They can enter your home if they have a warrant from the court and if they are accompanied by a Police Officer.

If your dog has been seized, contact your nearest animal shelter.

Unwanted dogs

If you want to have your dog placed in a new home or to give up ownership of your dog call us on 09 301 0101.  The fee for relinquishing a dog at an Auckland Council animal shelter is $70.

Other organisations that help with lost, missing and found dogs include:

  • Pets on the Net - which has lost and found listings.
  • Auckland SPCA - phone (09) 256 7300, the SPCA may provide assistance if the dog is sick or injured.

Adopting an unclaimed dog

If an owner doesn't claim their dog, we will assess it for adoption. Shelter staff test the dog's temperament and a vet checks the dog's health.

The shelter staff interview potential new owners, check their ownership history and may visit their property. They also arrange for the dog to be de-sexed, vaccinated and registered.
