Kia ora koutou.

I hope you are enjoying this wonderful Auckland summer. With three great harbours with hundreds of beaches, dozens of regional and local parks, and a huge range of events, we are really spoilt for choice when looking for things to do.

Auckland Council's free Music in Parks series continues throughout February, with concerts from Whangaparāoa to Papakura. The month's other highlights include the Auckland Lantern Festival, Auckland Pride Festival, and some great Waitangi Day events around the region.

Ferry services linking Beach Haven and Hobsonville Point with downtown Auckland start this month, so grab your AT HOP card and head out on the harbour.

I also encourage you to have your say on the council’s draft Annual Plan 2013/2014 and your local board’s priorities for the coming year.

The draft plan proposes an average rates increase of 2.9 per cent, down from the 4.8 per cent forecast. We’ve worked hard to balance financial prudence with investment in communities, transport and the local economy.

Next month, we will be seeking your opinion on the Auckland Unitary Plan, our new region-wide rulebook that will help us implement the Auckland Plan by setting out what we can develop and what must be protected.

Enjoy the summer fun and events.

Ka kite anō.
