Auckland Council is trialling an initiative to help people get home safely after a night on the town.
This initiative from the Mayoral Taskforce on Alcohol and Community Safety sees the council partnering with Auckland Co-Op Taxis to provide a fixed-fare system to take people home from the central city on Friday and Saturday nights between 10pm and 6am the following morning.
When entering the taxi, passengers will use a Ride Safe swipe card to activate the fixed fare and will know the exact cost of their journey.
Taxis must be caught at the Auckland Co-Op Taxi rank on Galway Street in Britomart. Ride Safe cards will be available for free in central Auckland bars, clubs and other venues from early December. The trial is expected to run for three months.
Mayor Len Brown says it will help get people home from the CBD rather than hanging around continuing to drink or behaving badly.
