Karekare’s famous beach race has been resurrected thanks to a new organizing team, generous sponsors, and horse clubs which wrote to the small rural community west of Auckland offering support.

In 2015 the event will combine with a beach festival and celebrations for the Karekare Surf Club’s 80th anniversary celebrations. Expect the stirring sight of horses and ponies thundering down the black sand beach, with its backdrop of volcanic cliffs and pounding surf.

Sweepstake betting, home-cooked food, games and raffles raise funds for the local school and surf club.

Race entrants can camp over and make a weekend of it, and classes will cover everything from thoroughbreds through ponies and Kidz Kartz to a novelty event.

A shuttle from Piha will ease parking congestion.
