Puhinui International 3 Day Event

Puhinui International 3 Day Event
Auckland rider Dannie Lodder and Moochi successfully through the water jump

The Puhinui International 3 Day Event is a pinnacle event on the New Zealand equestrian calendar, attracting the cream of Kiwi eventers.

This year, a number of international riders will be attending, including Jonelle and Tim Price. Returning to New Zealand for a short time, Jonelle and Tim have had an incredibly successful year on the international circuit. Jonelle finished fourth in the World Championships in France in August, and Tim won the top event in Germany, the Luhmuhlen 4*.

Close to the Auckland Airport, the Puhinui Reserve is a very easily accessible and attractive, making it a great outing for a wide range of people from those ardent eventing fans through to those keen on experiencing the thrill of eventing for the first time.

Eventing is best described as an equestrian triathlon. Comprised of three phases, the sport tests a rider’s skill more completely than any other. There are various classes scheduled, from the challenging CCI3* to novice level.

Dressage, the first phase held on Friday 5 December, shows the horse's and rider’s ability to perform a series of prescribed intricate movements on the flat in an enclosed arena.

The second phase, the cross country, is on Saturday 6 December. The challenging jumping course involves the horse and rider galloping over natural terrain, jumping a variety of fixed obstacles along the way including the spectacular water jump in the main arena. Puhinui provides an amazing venue for this alongside the Manukau harbour.

In the final phase of show jumping held on Sunday 7 December, horse and rider jump a series of easily knocked-down fences in the main arena. The rider and horse combination accumulate penalty points in each phase based on varying factors and the combination with the lowest amount of points at the end of the three phases takes home top honours. It is an exciting sport attracting interest from all levels of equestrians, from weekend hobby riders to professional international stars.

There will be opportunities to interact and learn from the visiting international riders throughout the competition. Jonelle and Tim will lead course walks around the cross country on Friday and will be available for you to talk to at various times during the event.

There will be many trade stands catering for those involved in the sport through to those wanting a good range of food and drinks.

You could spend the whole day watching the exhilarating cross country phase either from the various vantage points around the beautiful Puhinui Reserve. You may prefer a more up-market approach and relax in the Hospitality marquee, positioned to take in full view of the main arena over looking the water jump complex on Saturday or the showjumping on Sunday, while enjoying fine hospitality (morning and afternoon tea, sumptuous buffet lunch and complimentary bar facilities). This needs to be pre-booked and details are on the website below.
