Shared spaces

What are shared spaces about?

Since 2011, our shared spaces programme has helped transform our city centre.

We have converted some streets into pedestrian-friendly destinations where you can shop, sit, dine and spend time.

How shared spaces work

The shared spaces programme involves removing the traditional distinction between footpath and road so that vehicles and pedestrians can share the space.

We assess each street and engage the public through design consultation before works begin.

Current shared spaces

People now enjoy shared spaces on:

  • Darby Street
  • Lorne Street outside the Auckland Library
  • Fort Street
  • Jean Batten Place
  • Fort Lane
  • O'Connell Street
  • Totara Avenue West in New Lynn.
