An elected member who acts as a member of a resource consent hearing meeting is paid $80 per hour.

If a hearing lasts less than one hour, the fee is apportioned accordingly.

Review of elected members' remuneration

Following a review by the Remuneration Authority in 2018, the way councillors' remuneration set is due to change following the 2019 election.

The Remuneration Authority will continue to set the remuneration of the mayor and local board members.

The new system for councillors' remuneration

The new system will allocate a pool of money to the Governing Body, which will be used to pay councillors' remuneration.

This will consist of a standard base remuneration set by the Remuneration Authority, and any additional amount allocated based on the councillor's extra responsibilities, like chairing committees or being appointed deputy mayor.

After the election, the newly elected governing body will present its proposal about how to allocate the pool of money to the Remuneration Authority, which will make its determination.

The new base salaries will be backdated to the day after the official election result is declared. Payments for roles with added responsibility will be allocated from the day after the council's formal vote.
