Mana whenua - kaitiaki (iwi resource management contacts)

Mana whenua - kaitiaki (te hunga hei whakapā atu mō ngā take whakahaere rauemi ā-iwi)

We engage with mana whenua on resource management matters, including resource consents and plan changes.

Legal context

The Resource Management Act 1991 requires local and regional authorities to keep and maintain information about iwi and hapū.

View Section 35A(1) of the Resource Management Act 1991 for full details.

Mana whenua information

We maintain a list of iwi authorities, organisations and individuals representing the interests of mana whenua iwi and hapū of the Auckland region.

The information we maintain also includes iwi planning documents that have been lodged with us, as well as iwi websites that provide valuable information.

We have also indicated the potential areas of customary interests of mana whenua relative to local board areas, as not all consent applicants are completely aware of tribal boundaries and areas of interest.

Note that the list should be seen in the context of Auckland Council requirements and obligations to mana whenua, and viewed without prejudice to other mana whenua or government agencies.

See Find mana whenua contacts to search the list for the relevant contacts in your area.

The information has been provided by mana whenua through:

  • relevant iwi planning documents
  • resource consent reports
  • environment court proceedings
  • Iwi submissions to other planning and council processes
  • Waitangi Tribunal reports
  • Te Kāhui Mangai (a website which Te Puni Kōkiri maintains providing relevant information on iwi authorities).
