Household rubbish diverted from landfill (updated quarterly)

Te Tahuri kē o te tuku para kāinga ki te hei purunga whakakī whenua

Mar 2019

About this goal

Our inorganic service has a goal of diverting 30 per cent of inorganic material from landfill. Previously, all inorganic waste was sent to landfill.

Importance of this goal

Diverting this waste reduces Auckland's reliance on landfills and maximises reusing or recycling materials. It also enables community and charitable organisations to reuse these items to create jobs, generate income and provide training opportunities.

How are we achieving this goal

A Resource Recovery Network will provide recycling hubs in communities across the city to significantly reduce landfill waste.

The recycling centres will become community destinations for businesses and residents to drop off goods, which can then be reused, recycled or refurbished. This is a long term project with 12 sites planned from 2015 -2025.

There are currently four sites across Auckland:

  • Helensville Community Recycling Centre
  • Devonport Community Recycling Centre
  • Waiuku Community Recycling Centre
  • The Recycle Shop –Waitakere Transfer Station.
