About this goal

Auckland has a vision of zero waste by 2040. In the short term, our target is to reduce 30 per cent of household waste going to landfill.

Importance of this goal

Achieving this goal is an important step towards our vision of zero waste.

About 65 per cent of the waste in the average rubbish bin could be recycled or composted. We want to help people to minimise their waste to benefit the environment.

We aim to:

  • make our waste services more efficient
  • find better ways to recover and re-use resources
  • send less waste to landfill.

How are we achieving this goal

Currently, we divert about 120,000 tonnes of recyclable material from landfill per year. We are helping Aucklanders reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill by:
