Character of the Albert-Eden Local Board area
Centrally located within the Auckland isthmus Auckland isthmus is a narrow strip of land between the Waitematā Harbour and Manukau Harbour., the area has very good transport links, well-established and relatively high density residential areas and an ethnically diverse population.
It has a strong 'village' character.
Village centres include:
- Mt Eden, with an arts focus
- Kingsland, which has in recent years become home to an edgier, younger culture
- Sandringham with its distinctively Indian community focus
- Mt Albert, whose community is in search of urban renewal.
Geography of the Albert-Eden Local Board area
Geographically, the area is defined by three volcanic cones:
- Ōwairaka / Te Ahi-kā-a-Rakataura / Mount Albert
- Maungawhau / Mount Eden
- Te Kōpuke / Tītīkōpuke / Mount St John
It is also defined by the urban streams and the sea coast.
Te Auaunga-Oakley Creek, the longest stream in Auckland City, flows into the Motu Manawa Marine Reserve at Waterview. Waititiko-Meola Creek converges with the Waitematā Harbour at Meola Reef.
There are a number of lava flow forest remnants - Withiel and Almorah in Epsom and Gribblehirst in Sandringham.
The area includes evidence of early Māori settlement: numerous pa sites and other intensive development, such as the excavation on Maungawhau, are found within Albert-Eden.

Located within the area are:
- Eden Park, which hosted key parts of the Rugby World Cup
- the popular Pt Chevalier beaches
- a number of well-used recreational areas and parks such as Gribblehirst and Ōwairaka parks.
