National Environmental Standards (NES) are nationally consistent regulations made under the Resource Management Act 1991. They set out planning requirements and technical standards on a variety of specified activities that affect the environment.
The NES may require you to submit information to us, or get a resource consent before you start an activity. They may also contain requirements for ongoing monitoring and reporting to us.
There are currently seven operative National Environmental Standards:
Certain activities near or in rivers, wetlands, lakes and streams may be permitted under the National Environmental Standards for Freshwater, but they must comply with the relevant conditions.
