Experiences
Students explore nutrient cycles, waste reduction and sustainable food systems through practical activities like:
- worm farming
- composting
- gardening
- seed propagation
- harvesting.
The use of the maramataka (Māori lunar calendar) connects environmental knowledge with traditional practices and values.
Students will be taught to identify changes they can make at home, school and in their communities to support:
- healthier soils
- food resilience The ability of a food supply to withstand and recover from crisis or disruptions.
- sustainable living.
Year level
Years 5-13

- Science: Life processes, ecology, nature of science investigations
- Social Sciences: Community, environment, mātauranga Māori connections
- Health and PE: Personal and community wellbeing
- Key Competencies: Thinking, managing self, relating to others, taking part and contributing
- Focus: Sustainability, cultural knowledge and practical action for change.
