Discover the role of wetlands in supporting shorebirds and their migratory habits.
Magical migrants
Experiences
Meet the magical migrants of the Manukau Harbour. Every summer, Manukau Harbour is home to thousands of shorebirds from the far reaches of the Northern Hemisphere.
Students become 'twitchers' for the day. With binoculars and telescopes at hand, they identify some of the birds feeding on the shell bank. Then it's down to the mudflats to take core samples and discover what makes the Manukau Harbour a world renowned wetland for birds.
Along the way, students will:
- develop an appreciation for these bird navigators and the wetlands that sustain them
- learn what they can do to help them.
