We can make our schools and cities more resilient to flooding by planting plants to increase absorbency.
What happens to rain when it falls in the city compared with in nature?
We are experiencing changes in our weather due to climate change, like more heavy rain events that cause flooding. Cities traditionally have plenty of hard surfaces like roads, roofs, playgrounds and car parks. These surfaces let water build up during rain events, filling stormwater drains and causing flooding.
In nature, soil and vegetation absorbs water and reduce the risk of flooding.
