Students become freshwater citizen scientists for the day!
Wai Care - junior and intermediate
Experiences
Using scientific Wai Care equipment, students will:
- investigate the health of the Arataki Stream
- test the stream's:
- temperature
- clarity
- dissolved oxygen
- pH level (levels of acids and alkaline)
- macroinvertebrates. Small animals without a skeleton that live on and under rocks, water plants, wood or debris.
Students will learn about water catchments and:
- decide if the stream is healthy
- discover what actions they can take to protect and restore precious awa (rivers).
Students and teachers can then borrow a Wai Care testing kit and check the health of their local stream.
