Wai Care - junior and intermediate

Students become freshwater citizen scientists for the day!

Experiences

Using scientific Wai Care equipment, students will:

• investigate the health of the Puhinui Stream at Tōtara Park
• test the stream's:
  • temperature
  • clarity
  • dissolved oxygen
  • pH level (levels of acids and alkaline)
  • macroinvertebrates. Small animals without a skeleton that live on and under rocks, water plants, wood or debris.

Students will learn about water catchments and:

• decide if the stream is healthy
• discover what actions they can take to protect and restore precious awa (rivers).

Students and teachers can then borrow a Wai Care testing kit and check the health of their local stream.
