Students become freshwater citizen scientists for the day!
Wai Care - secondary
Experiences
Using scientific Wai Care equipment, students will investigate the health of Puhinui Stream at Tōtara Park.
Students will do:
- abiotic tests that include observing and testing the stream's:
- temperature
- clarity
- dissolved oxygen
- pH levels (acid and alkaline)
- levels of nitrates and nitrites
- phosphate levels
- biotic tests that include identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates Small animals without a skeleton that live on and under rocks, water plants, wood or debris. as indicators of stream health.
Students can borrow a Wai Care kit to test their local urban stream for NCEA assessment standard Sci1.12 (AS90951): 'Investigate the biological impact of an urbanisation on freshwater stream ecosystems'.
