If the water is unsafe, we manage the risk by:

Phone the harbourmaster duty officer on 09 362 0397 (extension 0) to report pollution in the sea.

This service number is available 24 hours a day.

Do not give bread to ducks in the water as this can lead to avian botulism.

Why we do this

We investigate reports of pollution, take steps to clean it up or undertake remedial works to preserve and restore our natural environment.

For incidents of significant pollution, we may send warning letters and abatement notices to the people causing the pollution.

We may fine businesses up to $1000.

We may also prosecute individuals. This may result in imprisonment for a maximum of two years or a fine of up to $300,000.

Companies may face fines up to $600,000.
