Te Mana o te Wai is our vision for fresh water. An important part of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPSFM) implementation is working with mana whenua and communities to determine how Te Mana o te Wai applies to freshwater ecosystems in Auckland.

We are working with mana whenua on an ongoing basis to the extent they wish to be involved.

Phase one

In July 2022 we asked Aucklanders for feedback on:

how they value fresh water
their concerns (either for a particular water body River, lake, stream or sea. or for a whole area)
what they would like to see achieved in the future
their views on the proposed Freshwater Management Units.

Phase two

In November 2024 we asked Aucklanders for feedback on:

the proposed long-term vision for freshwater in Auckland
freshwater values and outcomes
how to look after our best quality rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands
how to protect and improve habitats
how to manage the increasing demand for water.
