Ko te kōrero kei muri i te ingoa / The story behind the name

This name means 'the crater'. While not obvious, the site was identified as a volcanic crater in 2011.

Traditionally it was a wetland area leading to Harania Creek. It is similar to, but smaller than, Te Pūkaki-tapu o Poututeka / Pūkaki Crater in Māngere - both are tidal water craters.

This is a large colourful playground by the Otago Place entrance. It has something for all ages, and toilets nearby.

The junior playground is fully fenced. It has a large mound with slides, sand play area, seesaw and rocker toys for the littlies to enjoy. The smooth path around the outside of the playground is perfect for riding bikes and scooters.

The older children will love the second playground that has climbing walls, ladders and ropes, tunnels, and swinging bars.

A large wooden structure with a tyre swing and a basketball half-court are on the southern side of the park.
