Te Rau Pūriri Regional Park - The beach.

Te Rau Pūriri Regional Park is a 340 hectare property at South Head on the South Kaipara Peninsula.

This park is unique because it offers access to one of the best beaches on the Kaipara Harbour and the major lake (Lake Rototoa) on the peninsula.

You need to know

Animals

Dogs, other animals and pets are prohibited at all Auckland Council regional parks' bookable sites and accommodation. The exception is registered aid dogs. You will need to advise our staff at time of booking if you have a registered aid dog for an exemption.
Dogs are allowed in regional parks only as stated in the dog walking section. All other animals are prohibited at all times, unless you have a permit issued by Auckland Council.

Alcohol

Visible and excessive consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
We may ask you and your group to leave the park and terminate your permit.

Smokefree regional parks

Our regional parks are smoke-free.
Please observe this while staying on or using our regional parks.

Waste

All our regional parks are rubbish free. Take all rubbish and recycling with you when you leave.

Outdoor fires

It is illegal to light a fire outside in all public areas in the Auckland region.

Pedestrian access

Vehicle access

No vehicle access into the park. You can only drive as far as the car park on South Head Road.

Toilet

There is one unisex toilet at the park entrance on South Head Road.

Parking

The car park is on South Head Road and is open 24 hours.

Mobile phone coverage

There is good reception across most of the park.

Picnic tables

There are two picnic tables at the park - one by the car park and one at the park entrance on South Head Road.

Native bush

Mature and regenerating native and exotic tree species cover this park. You will see kauri, tōtara, and pūriri on the ridges and coastal reaches.

Activities at Te Rau Pūriri Regional Park

Walking

Enjoy a variety of walks taking in great sea views across the Kaipara Harbour and the interesting farm precinct.

Drones

See Flying drones and unmanned aerial vehicles to find rules, guidelines and our code of conduct for flying UAVs and drones.

Horse riding

Designated poled trail on the east of South Head Road over farmland to the coast and views of the Kaipara Harbour. You must get a riding pass.

Sightseeing

Enjoy some great sights from the main beach area or walking tracks. The tracks provide elevated viewpoints of the sea across much of the Kaipara Harbour.

Picnics

A great place for a picnic. See picnics for information about large groups and conditions.

Weddings

You may need a permit to hold a wedding or civil union ceremony at this regional park. See Apply for a permit to have an event or wedding in a regional park for more information, or call 09 301 0101 and ask to speak to a Senior Park Ranger.

Mountain biking

You can ride on the open farmland and all tracks unless otherwise indicated. Most tracks cross farm paddocks with closed gates so you will need to lift your bike over the gate.

Farm animals viewing

Te Rau Pūriri is a working sheep and cattle farm. You are free to wander through the paddocks with the farm animals. Follow all safety signs and respect restricted areas. Leave gates as you find them.

Bird watching

A great place to view shorebirds with a resident population of oyster catchers. Kererū, tūī, fantail, godwit and many other species also frequent the park.
