If the area where you want to freedom camp is not on the list
If the area where you want to stay is not listed, this does not mean that freedom camping is allowed there.
Before you freedom camp, remember freedom camping is not allowed:
- in tents in a public place anywhere in Auckland
- on council reserves under the Reserves Act. Check for signage if you are unsure
- at regional parks
- anywhere else that doesn’t allow public parking or overnight stays, for example gated carparks and reserved parking. Check for signage if you are unsure.
In addition:
- general rules for freedom camping apply in other areas
- you still need to comply with normal traffic rules and parking restrictions in Auckland, as well as the rules outlined in the Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw.
