Project overview
We are upgrading the stormwater network in Newmarket to:
- reduce flooding
- improve water quality
- support future growth.
This project involves:
- installing new stormwater pipes and infrastructure under Lower Khyber Pass Road and nearby streets.
- separating the stormwater and wastewater networks.
This work is part of a wider programme across Auckland to:
- upgrade stormwater infrastructure
- make communities more resilient.
What we are doing
We are separating stormwater from the wastewater network to:
- improve drainage during heavy rainfall
- reduce the risk of overflows and blockages
- protect the environment
- strengthen the network for the future.
To achieve this, we are installing new stormwater pipes and related infrastructure along:
- Khyber Pass Road
- Kingdon Street
- Osborne Street.
This will:
- direct stormwater to the right place
- reduce pressure on the wastewater network
- improve the health of Newmarket Stream and Hobson Bay
- upgrade ageing or undersized underground assets
- support long-term growth and planning in Newmarket.
Why we are doing this
Parts of the existing network are old and no longer able to cope with current or future demand.
During heavy rain, the combined network can become overloaded, leading to overflows and localised flooding.
Where the work is happening
Construction is taking place in and around:
- Khyber Pass Road
- Kingdon Street
- Osborne Street.
These locations are key parts of the existing stormwater and wastewater network and provide suitable connection points for the new pipelines.
What to expect
Summer construction period - late December 2025 to late January 2026
Major works have been scheduled during the summer period when fewer people are in the area, helping to reduce disruption.
During this time, our contractor will install critical sections of the new stormwater pipeline.
Some additional works may continue beyond this period, depending on weather and ground conditions.
Traffic management
The roadworks will cause temporary changes to traffic, parking and walking routes.
These include:
- lane closures on Khyber Pass Road. Traffic will stay open in both directions, but some turning movements may be restricted at times
- temporary footpath closures with safe pedestrian detours, including accessible crossings and temporary ramps
- bus stops temporarily relocated or closed, with signs
- continued access to businesses where possible. If short-term restrictions are needed, we will let affected businesses know in advance.
How we will minimise disruption
We know this is a busy commercial area. To reduce impacts, we will:
- carry out the most disruptive work over the Christmas and New Year period
- provide clear signs around the work site
- keep access open to the York Street / Khyber Pass parking building
- use staged traffic layouts to keep vehicles moving
- maintain regular communication with local businesses.
Estimated project completion date
We aim to complete this project by spring 2026.
