We are upgrading the stormwater network along lower Khyber Pass Road and Kingdon Street.
We are also providing a new stormwater connection to the University of Auckland Newmarket campus to improve water quality and reduce flooding.
The project is funded by the Water Quality Targeted Rate.
It is the first major infrastructure project of the Eastern Isthmus Water Quality Improvement Programme. Visit Waitematā Harbour water quality improvement to learn more.
The stormwater pipe on lower Khyber Pass Road, between Kingdon Street and Osborne Street, is at the end of its life. We will construct a new stormwater pipeline from Kingdon to Osborne Streets along Khyber Pass Road and 20 metres into Osborne Street.
A larger stormwater pipe will be installed on Kingdon Street to increase the stormwater network’s capacity.
We have started construction of the stormwater shaft at the end of Kingdon Street. The construction work will take nearly 16 months to complete.
The university campus is currently connected to the combined stormwater and wastewater network.
A new manhole and stormwater pipe will be installed at the campus and connected to the stormwater tunnel under Kingdon Street.
Separating the university campus from the combined stormwater and wastewater network will help reduce pressure on the network and reduce wet weather overflows.
Construction has begun and will take place from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. There will be no work on Sundays or public holidays.
All properties currently connected to the combined network will be disconnected and reconnected to the new stormwater pipes.
We are working with Auckland Transport to minimise disruption, but nearby traffic will be affected.
