How we manage stormwater
Me pēhea tā tātou tiaki rerenga wai āwha
We manage the quantity and quality of stormwater runoff to:
- minimise flooding
- maintain the environmental value of our aquatic habitats
- prevent the pollution of our seas.
Runoff is water from rain that flows over land into waterways and pipes.
Stormwater infrastructure consists of assets including:
- 6000km of pipes
- 45000 manholes
- 6700 catchment pits
- more than 900 treatment devices.
These are used to manage rainfall runoff from urban areas.
The Stormwater Bylaw sets guidelines for the management of stormwater through public and private stormwater systems.
For more information, see the Stormwater Bylaw.
