About the Te Atatū South Centre Plan

This consultation closed on 3 December 2018.

We received 145 submissions and an extra 306 verbal comments were transcribed and included in the feedback process.

Key themes

There were six key themes uncovered through the consultation process:

  1. Town centre access: There was general agreement that getting around and to the Te Atatū South town centre was challenging. People want improved connectivity for walking, cycling and vehicle use. Respondents felt park access could also be improved and that the safety of these access points was paramount.
  2. Community identity and activity: There was praise for the proposed "Gateway to the West" marketing brand. Respondents want a hub in the town centre with a variety of activities that would draw people in and keep them in the area.
  3. Centre improvement and a sense of place: The existing facilities were thought to be "tired looking" and require a clean or upgrade. Respondents were keen on a town square focal point (possibly at the existing community centre) with provision for a stage or an active marketplace for the area.
  4. Safety improvements: Many submissions discussed the need for better lighting, speed calming measures, and all-weather surfaces. Respondents want priority given to projects making arterial roads safer, using creative approaches that are effective and attractive.
  5. Parks and facilities improvement: The most common item of feedback was the needed for a playground suitable for young families.
  6. Consider children, family and older people: Every piece of feedback stressed the need to make facilities, activities and resources family-friendly.

Next steps

The town centre plan is currently in its second phase.

We are studying the feedback and incorporating aspects of it into the design. The co-design group, which includes community members, residents, local schools, businesses and sports leaders, will be briefed on the consultation results in late January 2019.

We will present the final version of the draft plan to Henderson-Massey Local Board workshop in February for further discussion.

Final sign-off is anticipated at the March local board business meeting, however this may be delayed if the board or co-design group ask for large changes. It will be made available to the public once it has been approved.

Announcements regarding the town centre plan will be made on the Henderson-Massey Local Board Facebook page. If you have given us your email address, we will update you of any changes to the project.

The final plan will be available on the Henderson-Massey Local Board page.
