About the Wai Horotiu / Queen Street Valley Pilot

The Wai Horotiu / Queen Street Valley Pilot is part of a series of trials to change how city centre streets are used, so more street space is given to people:

  • walking
  • cycling
  • using public transport
  • delivering and servicing homes and buildings.

Where the project will take place

The pilot will take place between Mayoral Drive and Customs Street.

Why we're doing the trial

The pilot will test the principles of the City Centre Masterplan concept, Access for Everyone.

Queen Street needs to be ready for the reopening of the Wellesley and Albert Street Intersection in 2021.

At the same time, the Victoria and Albert Street intersection will close for 18 months to allow for further construction of the Aotea City Rail Link (CRL) station.

Creating a safer, greener, more connected city centre

This pilot is the first in a series of stages to improve Queen Street for everyone.

The project will:

  • prioritise people and public transport
  • improve the environment
  • reduce traffic
  • create a more connected city centre.

What we'd like your feedback on

We want your feedback to help us come up with solutions that Queen Street users want, and that meets the needs of lots of different users.

We'd like to hear:

  • what you like
  • any safety and functional issues
  • what could be improved
  • any other ideas and suggestions.

When you can have your say
