Tawhitokino campsite at Tawhitokino Regional Park

COVID-19 Alert Level 2 – Accommodation information

Self-contained vehicle sites are open for bookings.

Campgrounds (subject to usual seasonal closures) and lodges are open but group sizes are limited to no more than 10 people.

Baches are open for existing bookings from 31 August 2020.

All bookings for accommodation prior to 31 August 2020, whilst at alert level 3, have been cancelled and we are processing full refunds.

This campground is that the far end of Tawhitokino Beach. It is part of the Te Ara Moana kayak trail.

The trail takes you past Te Iwirahirahi Point, Ruakura Bay and Waiti Bay to the white sands of Tawhitokino Beach. It's a 30 minute walk back to Waiti Bay making it a very tranquil escape.


Accessible by foot only

There is no vehicle access. The campground can only be accessed by foot at low tide.

Directions and access

From the car park at Kawakawa Bay, follow the Tawhitokino Track on foot around the rocks and over Papanui Point to the beach.

Booking information

Bookings can only be made six months in advance for campgrounds. Availability refreshes at midnight daily.
Group bookings are limited to a maximum of 10 people.

Toilets and bathrooms

Two compost toilets on site.




Dogs are prohibited at all times.



Your campsite must be clean and tidy during your stay, and when you leave.



No bins or rubbish disposal facilities. Take all rubbish and recycling with you when you leave.


Overnight vehicles and tents

You may stay in tents only.
No vehicle access.



Fires prohibited at all times.
