About Area and Centre plans

What are area plans?

Area and centre plans provide a long-term (20-30 year) vision for your local area.

To create area and centre plans we refer to the Auckland Plan, and what the local community say they would like for their local area.

We are developing 21 area plans, based on the same geographic areas as local boards. Centre plans cover a smaller geographic area.

Purpose of area and centre plans

Area and centre plans:

  • provide long-term strategic direction to help create land use policy within the Auckland Unitary Plan
  • help create future versions of the 10-year budget. This helps us prioritise and budget.

Objectives of area and centre plans

Your area or centre plan covers:

  • local issues, challenges and opportunities
  • timing of development projects and infrastructure needs
  • how we use land to live, work and play
  • how town centres function, their size and role
  • key transport routes and improvements
  • heritage, landscape, landmarks and natural features
  • social and cultural facilities
  • public open space
  • local business and employment opportunities.

Your area plan will be part of our 30-year vision for Auckland.
