About Thriving Rangatahi
We introduced our Thriving Rangatahi plan in 2024 to replace our previous child and youth strategy, 'I Am Auckland'.
Thriving Rangatahi aims to improve outcomes for tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people) in Tāmaki Makaurau.
It focuses on five key areas that matter most to children and young people. It also sets out ways of working to help us achieve these goals.
The five focus areas are:
- health and wellbeing – young people can access what they need to live a good life
- civic participation – young people lead and are listened to on issues that matter to them
- connection and belonging – all young people feel they belong in Tāmaki Makaurau
- access to opportunities – young people have access to a good education, career opportunities and safe, reliable and affordable transport options
- climate and environment – young people are connected to, and care for, the environment.
We will work to achieve these goals by:
- working with central government, mana whenua, Hapū and iwi with ancestral relationships to certain areas in Tāmaki Makaurau where they exercise customary authority. child and youth organisations and communities
- providing support to the children and young people who need it most, in ways that meet their specific needs
- making sure young people have a say in decisions that affect them.
Community wellbeing strategy
Thriving Rangatahi is part of our community wellbeing strategy – Ngā Hapori Momoho Thriving Communities. While both strategies support the same outcomes, Thriving Rangatahi focuses on children and young people.
Thriving Rangatahi recognises that healthy and thriving children and young people are essential for strong and successful communities.
