City Rail Link

About the project

Auckland has been growing rapidly, and with this growth has come a growing demand for better public transport.

The City Rail Link (or CRL) is a 3.45km underground tunnel connecting Britomart, Aotea Square, Karangahape Road and Mt Eden.

It will help people move around the city centre and its surrounding suburbs, as well as reducing train times across Auckland by making Britomart a through-station.

The project will also allow for the streets along the route to be upgraded.

What's involved

The CRL will extend the existing rail line underground through Britomart, up Albert Street, Vincent Street and Pitt Street to Karangahape Road. It will then cross under the motorway junction to Symonds Street, before joining the existing western line at Mount Eden.

There will be two new stations added:

  • Aotea, with entrances on Wellesley Street and Victoria Street.
  • Karangahape, with entrances on Mercury Lane and Beresford Square.

The station at Mount Eden will also be developed.

The CRL is currently under construction. It is due to be finished in 2024.
