Sunnynook Park stormwater upgrade

What the project is about

We are excavating Sunnynook Park to create more flood storage.

The sports field surface will also be upgraded to sand carpet fields to increase sports field availability especially in winter.

This project also aims to:

  • improve drainage
  • widen shared cycleway and pedestrian access
  • upgrade the debris screen at the stream
  • improve the flood wall on Sycamore Drive.

The excavated material from Sunnynook Park is proposed to be disposed at Wairau Intermediate School.

Both fields will be levelled.

Wairau Intermediate School will have an upgraded, level playing surface for school use.

Timeframe of the project

Works will start in October 2017 and it is anticipated site works will be completed by March 2019.

Noise and vibration will be kept within regulations.

Area access

There may be some traffic delays but will be minimised.

Access is along Sunnynook Road and around the community centre will be limited. There will still be access through the park.

The northern portion of the main car park will be temporarily closed off for use by construction personnel.

Use of the sports fields will be limited until the sand carpet surface is finished.
