Te Kaupapa Mahi mō te Manawaroa i te Waipuke o te Manga o Te Ararata

Te Ararata Creek Flood Resilience Project

We will increase the capacity of Te Ararata Creek to improve flood resilience for Māngere residents.

Making space for water to flow

In response to the severe weather events of 2023, we are speeding up our efforts to:

  • reduce flood risks
  • improve preparedness.

The Te Ararata Creek Flood Resilience Project is part of the Making Space for Water flood resilience programme, co-funded with central government.

About the project

The Te Ararata Creek flood resilience project will:

  • significantly reduce the risk of flooding to the residential properties and roads around Te Ararata Creek
  • increase stormwater capacity and make the network more resilient to future storm events
  • improve access to the stormwater network to make it faster and easier to maintain the site
  • improve the local area by changing the landscape and naturalising parts of Te Ararata Creek.

How we propose to do this

The proposed work includes:

  • installing a debris capture structure upstream of Walmsley Road bridge to reduce blockages
  • replacing Walmsley Road bridge to increase water flow
  • improving the maintenance platform and accessway at the Mahunga Drive culverts to make maintenance faster and easier.

What happens next

To complete physical works and reduce flood risk in Māngere as quickly as possible, we requested an Order in Council, under the Severe Weather Emergency Recovery Legislation Act 2023.

Following public feedback, this request was approved and came into effect on 25 October 2024. It will expire on 31 March 2028, but we expect to complete works before then.
