What this programme is about
A sustainability leadership programme builds the capability of Auckland's young people so they can take their role as change agents, future leaders, early adopters and influencers within their communities.
The programme accepts around 50 students a year. It is designed to build action competence and support students to create action plans for sustainable change in their schools and communities.
The Young Leaders Programme is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It partners with the corporate sector to develop career pathways for participants with organisations that are committed to the sustainability journey.
Who can apply
Year 11-12 students who have been identified as having leadership potential, and who:
- are enthusiastic about the environment and sustainability
- have taken action for sustainability in their school or wider community.

GreenJam and MiniJams
Auckland’s young leaders, with the support of our Sustainable Schools Team, host an annual secondary schools sustainability conference, GreenJam.
This event is designed and delivered by students, and involves inspiring keynote presentations, workshops and the opportunity for young people to meet like-minded peers.
GreenJam is a relevant and meaningful networking forum that facilitates the sharing of ideas around global issues and local actions for sustainability.
The day culminates in action planning for students to host their own locally-based MiniJams across the region throughout the year.
MiniJams are designed to grow awareness and impact around key student-selected themes. These themes focus on locally relevant issues, such water quality, climate change, responsible consumption and production, political decision-making and taking action for sustainability.
