Save, generate and store energy

Switch lights off and unplug appliances when you don't use them, including those on standby like monitors and TVs.

Buy energy-efficient appliances. There are energy rating labels to guide you.

Insulate your home to save on heating. A well insulated house needs less energy to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Check if you can get financial assistance for heating and insulation through our Retrofit Your Home programme.

Install solar panels on your rooftop. You can also improve your energy efficiency by installing an energy storage battery, a solar hot water heater or an EV (electric vehicle) charger. Check if you can get financial assistance for heating and insulation through our Retrofit Your Home programme.

Reduce waste

Reduce water use. Fix leaking taps and running toilets. Only run full loads on your dishwasher and washing machine.

Recycle or donate household items to minimise waste going to landfill.

Avoid using disposable plates, cups and cutlery.

Reduce food waste by planning the right portions for your family. Consume leftovers and freeze your kai to extend shelf life.

Create a sustainable garden

Grow your own vegetables, fruits and herbs.

Have a compost pile for plant-based food scraps, dried leaves and paper. Composting produces no emissions and also keeps your lawns and garden healthy.

Use public transport

More people using public transport means fewer vehicles on the road. This minimises the need for road development and reduces gas emissions.

Donate old curtains

Drop off your old, full-length curtains to one of many collections points around Auckland.

They will be cleaned and distributed to families living in cold, damp houses, or those with sick or vulnerable children.

Curtains need to be in relatively good condition (no mould).

Blinds or rails are not accepted.
