Eligibility for a grant

Who can apply for a grant

Individuals, groups, organisations and entities, whose projects, events or initiatives clearly and directly benefit the wider community, can apply for a grant. For example:

  • not-for-profit, charitable and voluntary 'community' organisations with a formal legal structure
  • individuals and groups with no formal legal structure
  • commercial entities (e.g. Limited Liability Companies)
  • social enterprises (e.g. Charitable trusts, cooperatives or unions, etc.)

Organisations that may be connected to us or our elected members need to make sure they declare any possible conflict of interest (or perception of conflict of interest).

Our tip

Individuals and groups with no formal legal structure can apply for grants of up to $1000. If they require grants over $1000, they need to either:
  • nominate an 'umbrella organisation' to receive and administer the grant on their behalf
  • apply to have the funding released retrospectively.

For a list of possible grant recipients and grant-funded activities, see the Community Grants Policy (page 22).

Who cannot apply for a grant

As stated in the Community Grants Policy, grants are not available to:

  • political parties
  • internal applicants (i.e. to fund projects and programmes run by us or our employees)
  • council-controlled organisations (CCOs)
  • organisations receiving statutory funding under the Auckland Regional Funding Act
  • other local authorities, government agencies or public sector entities.
