The annual budget decision-making process

The annual budget sets the activities, services and investments for the following year, and details how we might pay for them. It is published every year. Every three years, a 10-year budget is published in place of the annual budget.

The mayoral proposal

The draft mayoral proposal was the first step in developing our annual budget. This outlined the issues Mayor Wayne Brown thought were most important for Auckland.

The mayor updated the 2023/2024 annual budget proposal on 1 June 2023.

Political consideration and decision making

In the months that followed the draft proposal, our Governing Body discussed the mayoral proposal and developed the proposed annual budget.

Following public consultation and Auckland's extreme weather events, the mayor revised the proposal on 1 June 2023.

Public consultation

We asked Aucklanders to have their say on the Annual Budget 2023/2024 between 28 Feb and 28 March 2023.

Your feedback was analysed and put into a report for the Governing Body to read.
