Federal Street transformation

About the Federal Street transformation

We're working to upgrade Federal Street to create vibrant people-friendly spaces, with accessible walking and cycling connections.

The upgrade is designed to:

  • open up the city centre by creating shared spaces for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles
  • create a more attractive streetscape with native plantings, public art, street furniture and better lighting
  • provide good connectivity for commuters coming from western and inner-city suburbs
  • allow people on bikes to connect with the rest of the City Centre Cycle Network, via Vincent and Hopetoun streets, and the Victoria Street Cycleway, which is currently being constructed
  • enhance transport connections to maximise the potential of the nearby future City Rail Link Aotea Station.

Creating Auckland's laneway circuit

Federal Street is a popular route for people to walk and cycle through the middle of central Auckland. It experiences fairly low traffic volumes in comparison to Queen Street and Hobson Street.

When complete, the upgrades to Federal Street will form part of Auckland city centre’s ‘laneway circuit’. This is a concept from Auckland's City Centre Masterplan.

Project timeline

The project is being implemented in four stages:

Stage one

Stage one is already complete, which upgraded the area between Victoria Street and Wellesley Street.

Stage two

Stage two is now complete, which upgraded the section of Federal Street between Mayoral Drive and Wellesley Street.

Stages three and four

Stages three and four will develop Federal Street from Victoria Street to Fanshawe Street. Concept designs for these stages have been developed.

Timeframes for progressing design and construction are not yet determined.

Funding for Federal Street transformation

The Federal Street transformation is funded by Auckland Council’s city centre targeted rate, which is paid by city centre residents and business owners.

Other projects that make up the city centre laneway circuit are also funded this way.
