Freemans Bay stormwater network separation project

Last year we completed the major works to separate the combined stormwater and wastewater system and improve water quality in Freemans Bay.

Next steps

We are installing a gross pollutant trap (GPT) to collect surface debris and further reduce the number of contaminants entering the network.

We are also conducting remediation works in the area.

About the gross pollutant trap

Gross pollutants traps (GPT) are structures that trap solid waste, such as rubbish and debris.

The GPT in Freeman's Bay was postponed in 2020 due to COVID-19 and budget restrictions. Funding has now been secured and installation began in September 2022.

A shaft will be built in the road outside 59 Hepburn Street. The GPT will be installed, connected to the stormwater pipe and then the road will be reinstated.

Underground services, including power and water, may need to be relocated before construction of the GPT can begin. We will work with utility providers to complete this.

Remediation works

Improvement work will include:

  • replacing the pram crossing on the corner of Hepburn Street and Ponsonby Road
  • locating and sealing existing catchpit connections on Picton Street and Hepburn Street
  • improving and fixing several existing catchpits
  • investigating abandoning a stormwater tunnel at the intersection of Wellington Street and Hepburn Street
  • abandoning two stormwater leads and one manhole along Anglesea Street
  • working with property owners to resolve private cross-connections between the stormwater and wastewater network.

How this will impact you

Physical works started in June 2022 and are expected to be completed in August 2023.

Construction hours are Monday to Saturday, 7.30am to 6pm.

During work hours there will be construction noise, vibrations and dust around the work sites. We will monitor these to make sure they are within in the allowed limits.

There will be partial road closures during the project. We will contact all residents before these changes take place.

Construction may affect access to some driveways during work hours. We will work with residents to limit disruptions.

Street parking will be reduced during this time.
