Harania Creek Flood Resilience Project

We are working with the central government to reduce flood risks in Māngere by increasing the capacity of Harania Creek. We started construction works on this project in April 2025 and expect to finish in mid-2026.

About the project

The Harania Creek Flood Resilience Project is part of our Making Space for Water programme. It aims to:

  • significantly reduce the risk of flooding to residential properties and roads around Harania Creek
  • increase stormwater capacity and make the network more resilient to future storm events
  • improve access to the stormwater network to make it faster and easier to maintain the site.

This project will reduce flood levels for at least 45 properties, including 13 with intolerable risk to life.

How we will do this

We have started construction on the embankment between Blake Road and Bicknell Road.

The construction work includes:

  • replacing the embankment with an open stream and pipe bridge to increase the water flow of Harania Creek around the Wai-purea / Blake Road Reserve
  • building a footbridge over the stream
  • streamside (riparian) planting.

While this project will not completely prevent flooding, this investment will reduce risks by:

  • providing more protection against future flooding
  • preparing us better for heavy rain events.

This project does not include work on the embankment at the south-east corner of Blake Road Reserve. We will continue to investigate long-term options to improve waterflow and prevent blockages at this embankment.

How this will impact you

Construction will take place every Monday to Saturday from 7.30am to 6pm. In the event of an emergency, there could be construction works on Sundays.

During the construction:

  • we will use Wai-purea / Blake Road Reserve to store construction materials
  • there will be restricted access to Wai-purea / Blake Road Reserve
  • we will contact you if we need to access your property but this is unlikely
  • we will monitor any noise, dust and vibration to make sure they stay within required limits
  • we will remove some street parking on Blake Road, Bicknell Road and Archboyd Avenue for safe truck and machinery movements
  • we will mark the 'no parking' areas with a dashed yellow line.
