Central Auckland - Rubbish, recycling and food scraps bins and charges

​Rubbish and recycling bag collection service for Auckland city centre

Wheelie bins are not suitable for properties in the city centre, so this area has a rubbish and recycling bag collection service.

We provide both orange rubbish bags and clear recycling bags for properties that pay a waste charge in the city centre. These bags are allocated twice a year around February and August.

If you run out of council bags, you can buy more at Central City Library and council services.

The food scraps collection service is not available for Auckland city centre area.

Recycle bin dimensions

• 360-litre bins are 1100mm high and 848mm wide.
• 240-litre bins are 1060mm high and 730mm wide.
• 120-litre bins are 930mm high and 545mm wide.

​Rubbish, food scraps and recycling bin charges

If you are requesting new waste services, your pro-rata invoice will include the total charge for rubbish, recycling and food scraps services. The food scraps charge applies even if you choose not to use the food scraps bin.

The annual charge for waste services is pro-rated based on the month the bin was ordered.

Waste charges will be added to your rates account from the following year.

You will not get a refund on your rates if you downsize a rubbish bin. The extra charge for the larger bin will be removed from your rates from 1 July the next rating year.

​The annual charge for a new waste service (recycling, food scraps and rubbish bin) is pro-rated based on the month the bin was ordered.

You can use an Auckland Council compostable bin liner in your food scraps kitchen caddy to help remove odours and keep them clean.
